I’m disappointed in myself for engaging in certain discussions within the Cape Town SBK scene as it has led to unnecessary conflict and misinterpretation.
What should be a space for dance and camaraderie has, in some instances, become one of exclusion and misrepresentation.
It seems that nuanced conversations are difficult to have in this space, when I look at the WhatsApp screenshots from the groups I’m removed from it is not an attempt at dialogue but a campaign to discredit me.
So, I am accused of bullying, misogyny and racism, serious allegations that I categorically reject.
Let me put you on game: There is a dancer who referred to herself as promiscuous in a WhatsApp group setting (group 1)
I responded with fun comments (Nelly Furtado anyone?) and later sent a direct message for clarification on the use of the word promiscuous.
Instead of a reply, my message was screenshot and circulated, fueling outrage.
I was swiftly removed from the group without an opportunity to engage.
The following day, the same individual, unprovoked, berated me in another WhatsApp group specifically designed for organizing a party. She demanded an apology while preventing me from responding to her directly.
With all eyes on me I was again removed from a group.
Instead of addressing the matter with me, individuals in the WhatsApp group (group 1) sought validation from each other, ultimately labeling me with terms that I find disrespectful, unfair and inaccurate. That group must feel so empty without me.
What concerns me about this debacle, besides the disrespect, is the culture of exclusion and public shaming that has emerged. There is a rush to label, ostracise, and silence those (me) who hold different perspectives in a belligerent manner.
In conclusion, I have no desire to be part of a scene where mob mentality replaces rational discussion. Besides, I’ve never attended a party hosted by one of the aggressors, making this self-exclusion effortless. Wop wop wop wop wop I’m a do my stuff.
Nevertheless, If there are genuine grievances against me, I am open to respectful conversation.
While I’m stepping away from specific SBK spaces, I hope the SBK WhatsApp scene will eventually embrace true inclusivity, one that welcomes differing viewpoints without resorting to personal attacks or public shaming.
PS. I have screenshots that will be shared upon request. Also I teach Kizomba on a Tuesday night and a Saturday afternoon at Havana Nights in Plumstead, holler at your boy.
